Pilcher Locations - Lelant

Lelant – once a harbour at the western shore of the river Hayle, birthplace of Rosamunde Pilcher

Rosamunde Pilcher was born on 22nd of September 1924 in Lelant, three miles from St Ives. She was born in a modest Victorian detached house called „Chilecito Villas“ which you will find on the A 3074 towards St Ives. Later it was a boarding house and her parents lived here for six weeks until their villa in the same village was ready to move in. The Elms is situated near the little train station. This is where she grew up and wrote her first short stories which the television films are currently based on.

Filming took place at the cemetery of St Uny, a 15th century Norman church. There are terrific views across the estuary and sand dunes of Hayle. The cemetery was the background of the scene where the married Haverstock couple had their big argument in “Voices in Summer”. Recently they filmed the cemetery scene of  A Secret to Tell” here.
